I've made no secret of the fact that I think Kris Kristofferson is the greatest songwriter of the past half century.

I first 'discovered' Kris when i was still in high school in the early 1970's and have been in awe of his talent's ever since. You know his biggest songwriting hits like 'Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down', 'For The Good Times', 'Why Me, Lord' and more. And in my opinion, his even greater work is included on his albums ('Jesus Was A Capricorn' is a personal favorite).

Anyway, the other night I was watching the History Channel, and an advertisement came on for a new 'event' they're airing beginning Memorial Day called 'Texas Rising'.

Now, I should mention one of the other passion's I have is history, particularly American history. But as I'm watching the ad for the upcoming show, I'm hearing a voice that's recognizable. Very recognizable.

Yep, that's my guy Kris singing what must be the theme for the event.

Now that song sounded familiar, very familiar. Since I've been on the planet, upright and taking oxygen, for a loooong time, I couldn't put my finger on it. But then it hit me! I had a CD at home by the great Man In Black that included that song.

But of course the song also brought me back to my old rock-and-roll days, doing Top 40 radio in the fun 'ol days. Yessir, I certainly do remember spinning that very same song by the great Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

As they say, a great song never dies. And so it is with 'I Won't Back Down'. And I'm really looking forward to 'Texas Rising' on the History Channel beginning memorial Day night.
