Named after the Lakota word wakan, meaning 'holy', or 'mysterious.' The literal translation is 'it is sacred.' This week was my first trip to the town built in 1884 by the Chicago and North Western Railroad.

The first thing that stood out to me about this town was the great feeling of patriotism. Photos of soldiers in the local gas station, American flags lined the streets, and the amount of pride the people serving up a pork lion sandwiches in legion took in taking care of the building.

I was unaware of the 17th annual Girard Auction that takes place in Wakonda and is a sight everyone should see in person.

Walking around this town as it prepared for the 17th annual auction I was like a kid flipping through a dream magazine of muscle machines and bike blasts from the past.

I felt myself being transported back to my favorite car crush movies like Smokey and The Bandit!

The American Legion was an amazing display of a proud town honoring our servicemen and women. Jim served up a great pork lion sandwich while I took a look at just a few of the many signs and toys getting ready for auction.

It's a great feeling being in a great small town and if you can time your trip to Wakonda and be there during the Gerard Auction or the preparation leading up to it you won't be disappointed.
