Kickin’ Country Small Town of the Day-’Lake Andes, SD’
Lake Andes. Or as the locals say, L.A. It’s located in Charles Mix County about 9 good 3 woods away from the Missouri River. (Watch out for rattlesnakes and coyotes if you go off road)
I know a little bit about Lake Andes. I’ve picked up a bag of ice or 50 at the Gus Stop, watched friend Dan pump more gas into a boat or jet ski that I was about to ride than any man should have allowed. St. Marks is our church away from home on a lot of weekends, other highlights: I’m not on the list of ‘no entry allowed,’ at the grocery store
I know a few people that live there. Cody/Frybread, Junk Man, Steet Rat, Coon are some of the nicknamed acquaintances. Colt and Conner, Sal, Jeff and Monica and a guys name I forget, but recall one hell of a party at his new shed 29 years ago when I’d first met my wife.
I’ve drove through town, around town, been to the Fourth of July Fireworks show and have witnessed the beauty and splendor of the town from the Laska Highway. Yep. I know a little about Lake Andes.
The big event every year in LA is Fish Days. It happens to be going on this weekend and kicks off Friday, May 31. According to a Facebook post:
There will be 9 beautiful young ladies vying for Miss Fish Days Queen next Friday night at 6pm. Come cheer on
Brooke Deurmier, Nichole Dvorak, Rebecca Lehmann, DiMera Dvorak, Jacie Braun, Payton Johanneson, Ashley Kirkpatrick, Sydney Myears & Mikayla Petsche! Good luck ladies!
Also, good luck to our Lil’ Miss Fishy candidates! Displaying their talent will be Isabella Alcaraz, Kali Maynard, Caulise O’Connor, Abigail Svatos, Riata Bultje, Aubrey Gray and Kyleigh Rouse!!
Oh, and don’t forget Colt and Connors Bean Bag Spectacular. These guys know how to run a bag tournament, and their not bad partners if you ever need to pick a partner up at a campground. Bring your sunscreen and lawn chairs, you’ll need ‘em.

(Side note: I don’t think Brandon will be around this year for the tournament. But we can congratulate him on his engineering degree from ‘Mines’ and know that he’ll be cheering for a distance with his new job in Chicago. (Has something to do with tunnels)
Yep, Fish Days is this weekend. One year I was down for the Hose Challenge or better stated…Water Fights with the local Fire Crew. That’s one of the highlights to the weekend along with the Demo Derby oh, and who could forget…maybe a beer or two.
If you’re bored this weekend, take a little trip. It’s a pretty big deal these ‘Fish Days’ in LA.
Oh, if you look at Charles Mix County on a map, you’ll notice that it’s shaped pretty much like the State of California. So I nicknamed it California County which would make Platte.. Sacramento and Marty San Diego.
I’ll be in touch with Governor Daugaard this summer to see if we can’t get the name changed. At least for a day.
I mean no harm to any of the individuals mentioned in this story. Hope to see you soon.
Side note, I just got a note from Daniel Park who is the Mayor of LA. He wanted me to mention that St. Marks Youth Breakfast is Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. Followed by the South Central Chapter of Abate Motorcycle blessing which will be followed by the Mayor’s Ride to the Dock at Running Water. He said even Japanese bikes are welcome. (He must have a Harley!)
Thanks for your e-mails and facebook posts. You make the Kickin’ Country Small Town of the Day…FUN!
