Kansas Sinkhole is a Mystery [PHOTO]
Wallace County, Kansas is turning into a tourist attraction after a giant sinkhole formed in a rancher’s pasture over the weekend. The 90-foot-deep, 200-foot-wide crater, which is growing by the day, is drawing visitors by the dozens to gawk at the phenomenon that has geological experts baffled.
The town’s sheriff is warning people to stay away for fear there is more to come.
According to the area sheriff, there is no immediate explanation for the earth to open up like this although there are theories-a-plenty on the message boards. This from Edward Dinzler:
You can only take so much out of the ground and it doesn’t matter if it’s oil, water,or whatever, if you have a big open pocket under ground sooner or later it will begin to collapse.”
Or this from Buck Sunset:
Pumping the aquifer will cause sink holes. My understanding is the water level in the Kansas aquifer has dropped over 400 ft. since they started irrigation pumping about 50 years or so ago. Remember the Minuteman Silos? Pure dirt for at least 200 ft. No idea of where bedrock is.”
Whatever the cause, people are coming from mile around to see the sinkhole that’s growing daily. Officials near Sharon Springs in western Kansas have called in experts on sinkholes to get some advice on where to go from here.
The sheriff was quoted by CBS News, “This is not a man thing, it’s a God thing. This is His earth. We just live on it.”
