Jacks Stumble In Series Finale
OMAHA, NE — The South Dakota State softball team scored first in the finale of a three game Summit League series against Western Illinois in Omaha, but the Fighting Leathernecks responded with 10 unanswered runs to secure a series sweep with a 10-1, five inning win on Sunday at Fontenelle Park.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 14-24 on the season overall and to 4-11 in The Summit League, while the Leathernecks improve to 13-19 overall and to 7-12 in the league.
Sammy Bingham, who led the Jacks with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, knocked in the Jacks lone run of the game in the first inning, which scored Devon Reick from second.
Western Illinois came back with three runs in the top of the second to take the lead for good at 3-1, adding a single run in the fourth and three runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to lock up the run-rule victory.
The Jackrabbits look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday, when they start a three game series at North Dakota State in the Fargodome. The series begins with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m., followed by a single game on Wednesday at noon.
