It's Legal to Buy, Sell, and Shoot Fireworks in Iowa Again

This 4th of July is going to be a real bang for residents in Iowa, that's because they can once again, buy, sell, and shoot fireworks in the Hawkeye State.

KDLT News is reporting, for the first time since the 1930's, fireworks are once again legal in the state of Iowa.

Iowa legalized the purchase and sale of commercial grade fireworks in early May, and now fireworks dealers in the state are busy preparing for a booming business this summer as they apply for permits.

Dan Winterfeld, a farmer near Sioux Center, and co-owner of ‘It’s Lit Fireworks’ told KDLT News, “The state has been swamped, and it’s not their fault. It’s just a lot of work, and they weren’t quite prepared, and (it) got thrown into the Fire Marshal’s lap.”

South Dakota stands to lose some business as a result of the recent Iowa law change. The good news is, many of the Iowa fireworks stands are buying their pyrotechnics from South Dakota fireworks wholesalers.

According to KDLT, Winterfeld's 'It's Lit Fireworks' purchased their inventory from Lew’s Fireworks in Watertown.

Winterfeld, his friend Joel Bousema, and their families plan to run a total of nine fireworks stands in northwest Iowa throughout the months of June and July.

The fuse has already been lit on the sale of fireworks in Iowa.

The new law allowed for the retail sale of fireworks in permanent structures to start on (June 1). Tents and other temporary structures can beginning selling on (June 13).
