How Close Is the Next World War [OPINION]

All human beings harbor some element of stubbornness with shades of arrogance, greed and hate. When these properties bubble to the surface, war is close at hand.

As great conflict looms on the horizon, a look at the dark past could provide a harbinger for the future.

World War II is the last immense struggle for power that sucked almost the entire world into the clutches of battle. Are there markers from that time that signal what lies ahead?

One potential parallel is the connection between Syria and Spain.

Prior to WW II, Spain underwent a civil war which turned out to be a proxy war for Germany and the USSR. The Soviets provided aid to the established Spanish Republic while Germany supported the Spanish Rebels.General Francisco Franco eventually became dictator by overthrowing the Republican government.

Syria in its current civil war has its dictator Bashar al-Assad who is opposed by rebels who are trying to expel the current regime.

There are big players looking to get into the game if conditions warrant, but not necessarily in the role of a proxy war as in the past. The rebels may have the United States coming on board in a supporting role after the use of chemical weapons because President Barack Obama has threatened the use of force.

In al-Assad’s corner are China and Russia who have pledged their assistance if needed. That appears to be the most glaring similarity between WW II and today.

World War III may start tomorrow or never, but based on the past there have always been battles among nations.

However, we pray that the smoldering wick of war is snuffed out by a prevailing  breeze of peace.
