Help For Wessington Springs

Advance warnings allowed the people of Wessington Springs, South Dakota to take shelter from an EF-2 tornado that hit the town Wednesday night which reported no fatalities thankfully, but extensive damage to the town of 946 residents.

Wessington Springs is 54 miles northwest of Mitchell. Wednesday night, June 18th storms started popping up through the south central part of the state as storm chasers from around the country were in the area. That probably helped save a lot of lives that night. But the damage will take a long time to clean up and that's where you can help.

The statistics show 43 homes damaged, 24 are uninhabitable and 10 businesses were damaged including The Hideout bar, the American Legion, and Springs Auto which were all destroyed.

Inmates from the Department of Corrections will be dispatched to help pick up debris, but monetary help will definitely be needed.

Donations may also be dropped off at American Bank & Trust locations in Wessington Springs, Alpena, Huron, Wolsey, Miller, Huron-Walmart, Pierre, Mellette and DeSmet.  Those donations will be forwarded to the Red Cross.  You can donate through the Red Cross website or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. Make sure you let them know you wish to designate the donation to Wessington Springs.

Oh My Cupcakes in Sioux Falls is also a drop off point. They are located in the Bridges at 57th and Western. Money dropped off will be directed to the Red Cross.

You can also drop off donations of bottled water and Gatorade, Clorox Wipes, garbage bags, diapers, paper products(paper towels, etc) and gloves will be collected and forwarded to the collection point in Rock Rapids, Iowa which has been under water from recent flooding.
