The recent shootings in San Bernardino, California, killing 14 and wounding another 17 people have not caused gun sales here in South Dakota to surge yet.

Typically, when firearm tragedies happen, like the one that took place on Wednesday in San Bernardino, gun sales nationwide frequently spike as many people start to fear that gun grabbing politicians will begin to target their Second Amendment rights yet again.

South Dakota is known for being one of the more gun friendly states in the nation. Due largely in part to our love for hunting in the state. But, there are also a number of residents like myself who value their right to bear arms for personal protection.

According to Sheriff Mike Milstead, "There are places in America where it's very restrictive on who can own guns and who can carry guns concealed and some of those are some of the most dangerous places in America to live in. South Dakota, it's fairly easy to get a concealed carry permit and a lot of our residents have them. It's one of the safest places in America to live and raise their family."

Milstead notes, one thing that does tend to happen in Minnehaha County after a gun violence tragedy is an increase in the number of concealed carry permits issued.

In Minnehaha County alone, more than 12,000 people have concealed carry permits.

As of right now, local gun shop owners in Sioux Falls say they haven't noticed a significant increase in gun sales. More of the guns they've been selling recently have been for hunting rather than personal protection.
