YANKTON - A recent Federal Transit Administration ruling is telling Yankton Transit that it can no longer provide exclusive school bus service to young riders.

The Yankton Press and Dakotan reports that the local agency this week is making changes this week to comply with federal law.

Parents in the community contract with Yankton Transit to transport more than 200 students to and from school at $2 per ride. After providing a $50 deposit and filling out an enrollment form, parents are billed monthly based on how many times their child rides a Yankton Transit bus.

Because of the FTA order, Yankton Transit can no longer prevent the general public from being on those buses, and some parents say that eliminates safety measures.
