Fraud Case Investigated in Sioux Falls

Sometimes it seems as though there’s nothing like a disaster to bring out the worst in people.

Sioux Falls Police are investigating a case where a local man wound up paying twice for some tree-trimming work.

Officer Sam Clemens says the homeowner told police a company from St. Paul, Minnesota was going door-to-door in his neighborhood and soliciting work on storm-damaged trees.

The man hired the company to do work for him at the agreed-upon price of $2500.

The work was done and the homeowner paid with a check, but the next day the tree guy was back to say he had done laundry and had inadvertently washed several checks, including the one the homeowner had written. So he asked for a second check.

Tree Guy was adamant the earlier check had been washed and would not be cashed, so the homeowner wrote the second check, this one for $2600.

The second check was cashed, but you guessed it–the first check was cashed a couple of weeks later.

The homeowner called police after he was unable to contact the company or the man he had done business with.

As I said, sometimes disaster can really bring out the worst in people.

And in this case, make honest people in that line of work look bad, too.
