Forget Arizona and Florida. South Dakota is the New ‘It’ State to Retire To.

How many ‘snow birds’ do you know? The older folks who retire and either move to the south where it’s warmer or at least spend October through March in Florida, Arizona, New Mexico and California? We’ve probably thought that it’s what you do when you retire since we were ten years old. But as Bob Dylan once famously sang “The Times They Are A Changin’”

According to a new CNN Money Report, South Dakota’s low taxes, relative lack of crime, and easy access to quality healthcare, make our state the #1 state for retirees.

The rankings give equal weight to the following categories: weather, cost of living, crime, quality of health care, state and local taxes and general well-being.

In fact, midwest and mountain states comprise the entire top 5 with Colorado, Utah, North Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana, Idaho and Iowa filling the top 9 spots.

By the way, ‘traditional’ retirement home Florida actually comes in at #39 on this list because of higher crime and living costs and lower quality health care while California was #28 due to state taxes and living costs.

South Dakota. Come for Mount Rushmore and the Badlands, stay for the early bird special.
