As promised, Florida Georgia Line's new single "H.O.L.Y." represents a new chapter in the ACM Vocal Duo of the Year's career. Guitars are hard to come by. Bravado is checked at the door. There's only room for sincerity and vulnerability in this first single from Dig Your Roots.

The piano-driven love song is a country power ballad. Tyler Hubbard sings lead, telling a story that feels pulled from the pages of his and Brian Kelley's individual songbooks. It's not. Nate Cyphert, William Larsen and busbee wrote the endearing, transparent lyrics.

FGL say that's what they're aiming for on album No. 3: transparency.

"H.O.L.Y." delivers without sacrificing artistic integrity. Lyrically, Hubbard switches between using metaphor and personal experiences. It's an effective love letter that, like so many Florida Georgia Line songs, is much sharper than they'll get credit for. Kelley and Hubbard have an ear for poetry.

Joey Moi's production on "H.O.L.Y." is counter to most of what he's done with the band. All three principal players in the creation of this song stand back to let Hubbard's vocals and the absolutely pure emotion of the song stand out.

Did You Know?: "H.O.L.Y." stands for "High on Loving You."

Florida Georgia Line's "H.O.L.Y." Almost Wasn't

Florida Georgia Line, "H.O.L.Y." Lyrics:

“When the sun had left / And the winter came / And the sky thought to only bring the rain / I sat in darkness / All broken hearted.”

“I couldn’t find a day / I didn’t feel alone / I never meant to cry / Started losing hope / But somehow baby / You broke through and saved me.”

“You’re an angel / Tell me you’re never leaving / Cause you’re the first thing I know I can believe in.”

Chorus:
“You’re holy, holy, holy, holy / I’m high on loving you, high on loving you / You’re holy, holy, holy, holy / I’m high on loving you, high on loving you.”

“You made the brightest days / From the darkest nights / You’re the riverbank where I was baptized / Cleansed from the demons that were killing my freedom / Let me lay you down / Give me to ya / Get you singing babe, Hallelujah / We’ll be touching, we’ll be touching heaven.”

“I don’t need these stars because you shine for me / Like fire in my veins you’re my ecstasy / You’re my ecstasy.”

“You’re the healing hands / Where it used to hurt / You’re my saving grace / You’re my kind of church / You’re holy.”
