How quickly we forget. First, learning how to properly handle a gun, learning to shoot and finally a trip to the field hunting for the first time.

With the official start of  fall just a few days away, thoughts of hunting have been swirling in my head. Facebook friends have already been out on successful Dove hunts here in South Dakota.  Sprinkle in conversation around the office regarding license draws for east and west river deer season and you can't help but get a little bit of fall fever.

This morning, I found an email when I came to work that got me thinking back about my first hunt and great times I had with dad while we were out in the field. Check this out.

I know your a huge fan of hunting and I'm a huge fan of yours so I had take a second and brag on my son a little!

Hunter Wilson, 10 years old  and went on his first ever Youth Mentor Deer Hunt this weekend in Hyde Co. We got there late Saturday and only had an hour to hunt, both his younger brothers had football games that morning so we couldn't leave earlier. We saw a few does but nothing gave him a clear shot so we held off until the next morning. 45 minutes before sunrise we were on a huge, fresh, still warm silage pile glassing  the fields around us. We didn't see anything other then roosters for about the first hour and then we spotted a Doe and a yearling working down the fence line about a half mile away. Knowing where they were heading we had to move fast and get to a corner post to cut them off. We got set up and after wait for what seemed like forever, she turned broadside at about 50 yards and he made a perfect shot and she went down 10 yards away.
JD, I've killed a lot of deer, and some pretty darn nice ones, but nothing and I mean nothing compares to Sunday morning! So proud of my son! We even got back to Tea in time for him to make his 4pm football practice!

Thanks Steve for sending that story along with the pictures. I would ask you to do the same if you're out this fall especially with your kids. It doesn't matter if it's a deer hunt, or if your after pheasants, ducks or geese. I would love to hear from you and hear about your time out hunting.
