Two days after the official start of The 77th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and we already have our first fatality.

KSFY TV is reporting the first fatal crash took place on Sunday morning (August 6) around 10:15, and it didn’t even involve a motorcycle.

According to the KSFY report, two vehicles were involved in the accident, a 2009 Toyota Corolla and a semi truck.

The Corolla was driving northbound on U.S. Highway 85 near Buffalo when it crossed the center line and collided with an on coming semi coming from the opposite direction. The driver of the semi attempted to swerve to miss the vehicle but was unable.

Driving the Corolla was a 25-year-old man from Manti, Utah. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the semi, a 44-year-old man from Dickinson, North Dakota did not sustain any injuries.

The KSFY News report states that both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol reported only 3 deaths during the entire 2016 Sturgis Rally, a significant drop from the 15 deaths recorded during the rally’s 75th anniversary year in 2015. That year an estimated 510,749 people attended the rally.
