Everything’s Coming Up Roses… and Geraniums and Petunias and Snapdragons! Getting to the Root of It at Landscape Garden Centers

It’s Spring!  The grass is starting to green, the trees are beginning to bud and you’re planning your flower beds and patio pots.

Every year, I look forward to the Spring Open House at Landscape Garden Centers.  It’s my first chance to walk through the greenhouse and pick out my flowers for my patio pots and flower beds.  My favorite flowers include zinnias, snapdragons, double impatiens – I like them all!  Your options are endless when it comes to creating a stunning garden.  There’s a fountain of color, from impatiens and petunias to coleus and geraniums.

If you’ve been to Landscape Garden Centers in the spring, you’ve seen these HUGE hanging baskets chocked full of blooms, and you wonder, how is that possible?  How can you have massive baskets overflowing with flowers in April?  I had to know the secret.

I know that Landscape Garden Centers grows a lot of their flowers on site, but how do you grow flowers in our winter, especially the winter we just suffered through?

I called Betty, the garden center manager at Landscape Garden Centers, and she told me all of their secrets.

Betty said they order their plants in the fall and the plugs are delivered in February. They unpack the flowers, put them hanging baskets and other pots and water them in pH balanced soil. The plugs grow in their temperature-controlled greenhouses behind the main store.

You’d think you could just sit back, water the plugs and watch them grown, but there is so much more to growing the perfect flower.  The staff fertilizes the plants, scouts for pests and disease and they trim and prune the flowers so they bloom at the right time. Not only do they take care of their plugs in this manner, they do this for all of their plants including the ones they buy-in that are ready for sale.  You know you’ll be taking home healthy plants.

A lot of work goes in to making sure you have healthy looking flowers all season long.  You can be assured you’re getting high quality plants that have been cared for like their own children.

The containers will finally make their way to the main store in late April where they’ll be ready for you to take home and nurture.  This is a look at the store last May.  Look at these beautiful hanging baskets.
