Sioux Empire Pit Rescue is planning to hold a fall adoption event, “Pittie-Palooza,” at Tractor Supply Company in Sioux Falls. The adoption fee on dogs will be reduced to $100 for any online applications received the day of the event, September 19.

“We were able to take in nine dogs during the month of August, so the rescue is bursting at the seams with wonderful dogs. Several of them have been in the rescue for over six months, which means that they are trained and ready to go to a forever home,” said Board President Rachael Leighton. “We are hopeful that now that summer has slowed down and people are getting back into their routines, they will think about adding a four-legged family member to their household.”

The rescue is entirely volunteer-based with no central facility, so dogs are placed in foster homes until they are adopted. With a limited number of foster homes available, the rescue is unable to take in more homeless dogs until adoptions make space. “It’s heartbreaking to say no to some of these urgent pleas to save dogs,” said Leighton. “Many of them come from communities with breed bans, so without a rescue like ours to take them, their future is bleak.”

The adoption event will be held from 1-3pm on September 19 at Tractor Supply in Sioux Falls. While all the same adoption guidelines will apply, a special promo code will be available at the event for adopters to get $70 off any dog they apply for that day. Ten adoptable dogs will be at the event for people to meet, including four dogs that are under one-year-old. Adoptable dogs include:
• Zeus, a three-year old male who has been in the rescue for over half his life. “This guy is the sweetest boy who will be 100% devoted to his owner, but he gets passed over because he doesn’t have the traditional pittie look,” says Leighton. “He does need a cat-free home.”
• Lucy, a deaf female who has learned sign language in her foster home. “You forget that she’s deaf because she sticks by your side and watches for cues,” said Leighton. “She is a lover who gets along well with cats and other dogs.”
• Hugo, a larger sized mix who has been with the rescue since he was a puppy. “He needs an active family that will keep him physically and mentally challenged.”
• Atlas, a six-month-old puppy. “He is becoming a sweet, calm, go-with-the-flow dog.”

“The exciting part of adopting a dog from a rescue is that you actually end up saving two lives,” said Leighton. “You save the life of the dog you adopt and then the life of the dog that is now able to be brought into the rescue.”

The public is encouraged to visit the rescue’s Facebook page or website for more information.
