Officials revealed the cause of an apartment fire on Wednesday in Sioux Falls. A six year-old child playing with a lighter appeared to be the trigger.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue subdued the blaze in about ten minutes after receiving the call just before 5:00 PM. Battalion Chief Travis Thom says crews saw smoke and flames coming from the first floor of the structure when they arrived.

No one was injured, but crews had to evacuate the building located at 701 N. Elmwood. Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens revealed the cause of the blaze during the Thursday morning police briefing.

One apartment sustained significant damage. The building was vacated for the night and the Red Cross opened a shelter for the displaced residents.

The building did not have a sprinkler system. Also SFFR wants to remind the public that if fire alarms are sounding, leave the building for your own safety.
