A mid-day crash took the life of a 14-year-old Mitchell boy Thursday west of Mitchell. The driver and three other passengers came away with minor injuries.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says at 11:30 AM, 22-year old Karla Martinez of Mitchell was driving a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee when she lost control on a gravel road (406th Avenue) about a quarter of a mile south of 252nd Street also known as Cemetery Road two miles west of Mitchell. The vehicle entered the west ditch sideways and rolled several times.

Lenard Boyer who was in the front seat, was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell and then transported to Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls where he died.

The driver and three rear-seat passengers remained in the vehicle and sustained minor injuries. They were all from Mitchell including 14 year-old Chastin Dampier, 14 year-old Justin Songer and 12 year old Jordan Songer.

Martinez was subsequently arrested for DUI Third Offense, Vehicular Homicide, Suspended Driver’s License, Contributing Alcohol to a Minor, Open Container of Alcohol and Seat Belt Violation. The investigation is ongoing into the crash.
