A candidate for Sioux Falls Mayor has changed his mind and will instead run for a different office when the ballots are cast. Nick Weiland has announced his plan to run for the Sioux Falls City Council At-Large B position.

The seat that he hopes to win is currently held by Christine Erickson who will run for re-election to win a four-year term. Weiland says he came to realize that he is not quite ready to run for Mayor of Sioux Falls.

“I’ve been doing this for a year, now and you learn the ins and outs of what it means to run for Mayor and be Mayor. I feel like my experience caters better to City Council.”

As a business owner, Weiland says being Mayor would take time away from his enterprise. Also Weiland is on the other side of recent votes made by the current office holder.

“I look at some of the votes she’s had on the golf contract and the parking ramp and disagree with those. I think that government should be open and transparent. When it’s not, people don’t believe in it like they should. When those deals are done behind closed doors people don’t respect government like they should.”

There are still seven announced candidates who plan to run for Mayor to replace Mike Huether who is term-limited. Candidates for either Mayor or City Council can start circulating nominating petitions on Friday, January 26 and they must be turned into the City Clerk’s office by close of business on Friday, February 23. The city-wide election will take place on April 10.
