A Keystone, South Dakota man died of injuries after his alfalfa crop dusting plane crashed at Kadoka Monday afternoon.

The pilot, former Rapid City police officer Joseph Schneller, died at the scene. He was 49.

Federal investigators continued their crash site review on Wednesday trying to determine why the single-prop plane failed shortly after takeoff at 4:18 PM Monday.

Jackson County Sheriff Ray Clements says witnesses reported the right wing suddenly dipped as the plane was rising.

The wing struck a light pole and the plane crashed near a sports field fence.
