SIOUX FALLS, SD — A strong relief outing from Amanda Walters and a three-run homer from Priscilla Quintana allowed the Sioux Falls softball team (14-25, 9-16) to earn a series split with Minnesota State University-Moorhead (7-34, 5-21) Saturday afternoon at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls.

The Cougars jumped on Moorhead starting pitcher Morgan Nybo (4-11) early, scoring two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Quintana singled home Katie Larson, who was hit by a pitch, before Shelby Thompson crossed the plate on a double-steal attempt.

In the second, leadoff batter Betsy Thomas reached base on an outfield error and was scored on Erin Scott’s base hit to left field. Two outs later, Thompson had a veteran at bat and laced an RBI triple to give USF a 4-0 lead after two.

The Dragons scratched one across in the third and the Cougars got the run back in their half of the frame with an RBI single from Thomas.

Cougar starting pitcher Bailey Bouman held the Dragons to one run on two hits through four innings, but things came unraveled for the junior with two outs in the fifth. After a hit by pitch and outfield single, Dragon Moriah Bruns blasted a three-run homer to clear the bases. Mollie Annen came up to bat next and followed with a solo shot that tied the game before Brittany York tripled and scored on a wild pitch to move the Dragons in front 6-5.

After the Cougars went quietly in the fifth, Walters took the mound in the top of the sixth and sent the Dragons down in order.
