Cougars Split Games With Marauders


SIOUX FALLS, SD — The University of Sioux Falls played its first home game of the season on Saturday when they hosted the University of Mary for a doubleheader at Sherman Park. The Cougars and Marauders split the two games, with USF taking the first game 8-0 and the Cougars falling in the second game 3-1.

Shae Hoskins paced the Cougars at the plate in the two games, going 3-of-5 with two RBIs and one run scored. On the mound, Amanda Walters was a force as she recorded ten strikeouts and only gave up four hits in her 10.0 innings of action.

USF 8, U-MARY 0 (5 Innings)
USF relied on hot bats and a dominating pitching performance to claim the first game of the doubleheader, ending the game in five innings thanks to their 8-run lead. At the plate, USF batted 0.478 with 11 hits and eight RBIs.

The Cougars got on the bored early as Bailey Bouman hit a line drive single up the middle of the field to bring home Erin Scott and Amanda Walters, giving USF a 2-0 lead.

USF got on the board again in the second inning when Bailey Bouman hit another single up the middle to Bring home Erin Scott. Bouman ended the game going 2-of-2 at the plate with three RBIs and one run scored.

The Cougars experienced an upturn offensively in the fourth inning as they scored five runs to give them their final margin of victory with eight runs. The scoring spree started when Amanda Walters singled through the left side of the field to bring Shannon Daly home. In the next at bat for USF, Shae Hoskins hit a single to left field which allowed Betsy Thomas to cross the plate. For a third straight at bat, the Cougars brought runs home as Kellen Dewey hit a deep triple that allowed Hoskins, Walters and Bouman to score. Dewey ended the game with two hits in her three at bats while also recording three RBIs.

Amanda Walters (11-2) led the Cougars from the mound as she pitched her third shutout game of the season. Walters picked up her 11th win of the season by striking out five of her opponents and allowing only one hit.

The loss was charged to Erin Keen (8-5) who gave up eight earned runs and 11 hits in her 4.0 innings pitched.

The Cougars scored their eight runs off of 11 hits while recording zero errors in the victory.

The bats cooled off for USF in the second game of the day as they went 0.231 at the plate, scoring only one run off of six hits in the 3-1 loss.

The Marauders took the lead early when a throwing error by Shannon Daly allowed Alana Norman to put U-Mary up by one run.

U-Mary increased their lead again in the third inning when a Julissa Perales single through the left side brought home Alana Norman for her second run of the day.

One more run was added to the Marauders lead in the fourth inning when a Demaree Rodriguez single to centerfield allowed Francine Villalobos to score, giving U-Mary a 3-0 lead.

The Cougars attempted a comeback late in the game as a Shae Hoskins double through the right side brought home Bailey Bouman and put the Cougars in good position with the tying run at the plate and only one out on the board. However, a pop-up by Kellen Dewey paired with a Taylor Jonas strikeout left the Cougars trailing by two runs heading into the final inning.

Shannon Daly kept things alive in the seventh inning as she hit a single to right field with two outs, but the Cougars bats stayed cold as a Betsy Thomas strikeout ended the game.

Bailey Bouman was credited with the loss as she allowed three earned runs and five hits in her 4.0 innings of action. Bouman also struck out two of the Marauders batters.

Amanda Walters came on in relief of Bouman in the fifth inning and allowed only three hits and recorded five strikeouts in her 3.0 innings pitched.

Pitching in her second straight game, Erin Keen picked up the win in game two as she went for 7.0 innings, allowing six hits and only one run.

The Cougars will return to action Sunday when they take on Minot State at Sherman Park with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 12 p.m.
