FAYETTE, IA — The University of Sioux Falls softball team (13-21, 8-12) suffered a heart-breaking setback in a doubleheader loss to Upper Iowa (22-13, 7-8) in Fayette, Iowa, on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars were mercied in game one, 11-1, and looked to have a split until UIU hit a walk-off two run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 4-2 win in game two.

Samantha Kane continued to be productive at the plate, recording hits in both halves of the twin bill. Taylor Boshart and Katie Larson each drove in a run.

In the first, a lead-off error by the Cougar shortstop was a sign of things to come. The runner would be doubled home and the Peacocks added two runs in the second before Rachael Anello’s RBI double to right center field punctuated a five-run third inning and closed Bailey Bouman’s outing. Upper Iowa touched reliever Shae Hoskins for three runs in the fourth to bring the mercy rule into effect.

Tara Duran took batting practice against the Cougars. The Peacocks’ backstop went 2-for-2 with five RBI, a two run triple and three run double. She scored two runs and also drew a walk.

The Cougars, meanwhile, had no chance against Brooke Redmond (10-5), the freshman left-hander who was allowed a hit about every other inning to go with a 3-to-0 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The Cougars’ damage off of Redmond consisted of one double and two singles, their only run scoring on Katie Larson’s sacrifice fly in the second.

Priscilla Quintana finished 1-for-2 with a double and run scored. Samantha Kane and Shelby Thompson each recorded fourth inning singles.

Bouman (6-7) took the loss, yielding eight runs on nine hits. Hoskins gave up three runs on two hits and walked a pair in one inning of relief.

The Peacocks manufactured a run in the bottom of the third off a walk, stolen base and outfield single. USF took a 2-1 lead in the fifth, despite not recording a single hit in the frame. Lead off batter Shae Reinke took first on a throwing miscue by the third baseman—the first of four errors committed by the Peacocks in the inning. She would score on an error by the UIU right fielder before Boshart’s two-out fly ball plated Kane, who had reached base with a fielder’s choice.

Upper Iowa would draw even a two-out RBI sac fly in their half of the fifth.

Neither team could get any runs across the plate in the sixth or seventh, and USF entered its third extra-inning game of the season tied with UIU at 2-2.

The game moved quickly to the 10th inning. After the Cougars went down 1-2-3, Peacock senior Hailley Haning led off with a single and was bunted into scoring position. The stage was set for Peacock starting pitcher Jacqueline Flood, who broke the Cougars’ hearts with a two-run walk off homer, her fourth of the year.

Though Amanda Walters (7-13) went toe-to-toe with Flood (8-3), her Peacocks counterpart, she couldn’t outpitch the Cougars’ hitting drought. The junior worked 9.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits, walked five and fanned four.

The Cougars mustered just four hits in the nightcap, with Kane, Reinke, Walters and Betsy Thomas each posting a hit. USF left 11 runners on base and committed two errors, while the Peacocks finished with seven errors in the field.

USF will continue NSIC play Sunday at Winona State.
