Cool Weather Brings Lower Tire Pressure

You may have noticed that your tires look a little lower lately and there is a reason for it.  The cooler temperatures have the air inside of them contracting or becoming smaller and because of that your tire pressure can be lower in your tires.  Quite a bit lower.

We talked with Dwayne Simon at Tires, Tires, Tires in Sioux Falls and he had some great tips for getting your car ready for winter. He said,

"You really should check your tire inflation monthly, but when the temperature drops significantly, your tire pressure will too.  Make double sure you check this time of year. As far as pressure is concerned, if you have any questions use the recommended rate of pressure which is posted on the inside panel as you open your driver side door."

By the way it's recommended that you use nitrogen in your tires year round, especially in colder weather.  FYI, Tires, Tires Tires will inflate your tires with nitrogen for free.  Nitrogen will hold a more consistent tire pressure.   If you call ahead, Tires, Tires, Tires will empty the air from your tires and fill them back up with nitrogen for free. In addition to more stable tire pressure, you will gain slightly better gas mileage by running nitrogen in your tires.

Simon also had some common sense recommendations for car care that could save you time and hassle later.  He said,

"It's also a good time to make sure all your lights and blinkers are working properly and it's a great time to install a fresh set of good wipers for your windshield.  While you're at it make sure you have hats and gloves and jumper cables in your trunk."
