College Students Resist Buying Costly Textbooks

I read a story in USA Today that says some college students are finding ways around the high costs of textbooks. Instead, they are copying or downloading texts illegally.

Now, I’m not condoning such things, but I’m pretty sure I understand the situation, even 40 years after I finished earning my degree.

It seems the cost of college textbooks has gone up something like 82 percent in the past ten years or so. You read right–82 percent!

Sure, I saved some textbooks, thinking they would help as references in the work world, but for the most part, once I finished a course, the book was of no use to me. And sometimes, the books were no good to anyone else, either, so you couldn’t sell them to other students.

Every semester, a book-buying company from a nearby state (OK, Nebraska) would come in and give you maybe 10% of what you paid for a book. It was aggravating and disheartening, but sometimes there was no choice.

So I understand students’ situation.

And those books I saved? I moved then from address to address for a while, but eventually I either gave them away or threw them away.

So where were the sneering book-buyers when I needed them?
