It’s a sad closure to some degree. A South Dakota Penitentiary inmate admitted to killing his cellmate.

Attorney General Marty Jackley made the announcement via press release saying that 28 year-old Douglas Ipsen entered a guilty plea to first degree manslaughter in the death of his cellmate Kent Davidson.

Ipsen admitted to strangling Davidson on September 7, 2014 with a homemade rope at Davidson’s request. This is a class C felony, punishable by up to life imprisonment and/or $50,000 fine. However when the judge administers the punishment decision, the plea caps the manslaughter sentence to 50 years.

Ipsen is currently serving a 60-year sentence for first degree rape and an additional consecutive 15 years for sexual contact with a child under the age of 16. The previous sentences are from Butte County.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 17 at 1:30 PM at the Minnehaha County Courthouse. The case was investigated by the Division of Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.
