Captain Galen Smidt has been named the new Assistant Chief of the Sioux Falls Police Department. Current Assistant Chief Matt Burns will become the Police Chief in October.

Captain Smidt began his career with the Sioux Falls Police Department in February 1993, serving as a Patrol Officer, Fraud Detective, Patrol Sergeant and in a number of other positions.

During a news briefing Thursday morning attended by Mayor Mike Huether, Current Police Chief Doug Barthel and Chief Matt Burns, applauded Captain Smidt for the appointment.

The Assistant Chief Position is appointed by the Mayor.
