The comeback was valiant, but not enough as the Canton Charge defeated the Sioux Falls Skyforce 103-97 Wednesday night at the Sanford Pentagon.

Canton (15-13) was able to gradually put space between the two teams in the first quarter extending the lead to 12 before the Skyforce (22-6) responded with a 20-2 run to take their first lead of the game. By halftime, Canton’s retort of a 24-5 string rebuilt a lead that was eventually trimmed to five with two minutes left.

Canton’s Nick Minnerath (21 points) unsheathed the dagger from downtown to expand the lead to eight one minute later to quell the uprising. Skyforce Head Coach Dan Craig brought attention to the difficulty of coming back from double digits down. “We’re relying on that second half or that quarter to bail us out. We need to start valuing possessions a little earlier in the game.”

Sioux Falls’ Jabril Trawick (14 points) echoed Craig’s words about the early-game lapses. “We just can’t come out with the slow starts. We’ve had a lot of miraculous comebacks this season and that’s not going to happen that often. We’ve got to know that we’re going to get the best shot from every team that we play. From the jump we’ve got to come out with that energy. They outworked us and got a big lead. We stayed with it and fought through it. That’s all we can do.”

Leading the way for Canton, rookie Quinn Cook served up 30 points and John Holland had 21. Sioux Falls got 23 points and 8 assists from Tre Kelley with Bubu Palo and Keith Benson both scoring 19.

Both teams will have back-to-back road sets this weekend. Sioux Falls will head to Westchester then Erie. Canton will go to Fort Wayne followed by Iowa.
