The man who opposes a two-time U.S. Senator has plenty of service in his background plus real world experience to reinforce his South Dakota roots.

Jay Williams is the Democrat who wants to unseat Republican John Thune for a slot in Washington D.C.’s Upper Chamber. Income inequality and environmental concerns are the top reasons for Williams to enter the race.

"I can't sit back and watch while all the money because of our rigged economic system in my view is flowing to the top one percent. I can't sit back and watch while we ignore the damage that man is doing to our environment to the point where it might make us extinct if we don't do something about it."

The Yankton resident also wants to inject some accountability into the election process.

"John Thune ran unopposed (last time). He's never had to answer for any of the things he's done. That's not right. I've done tougher things than this. I'm going to go out there and make him answer for what he's done. I hope the people will listen to that and maybe people are thirsty for a change. This gives us a chance for people to hear what I have to say and they can choose me."

Williams has been in public office previously by serving on the Yankton School Board and running twice for a seat in the South Dakota Legislature.

Following the Williams story takes you from growing up in Gettysburg, South Dakota to the Navy, Peace Corps, software engineering in Silicon Valley before returning to South Dakota in 1987.
