Canaries Drop Memorial Day Matchup in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, MB –The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-6) continued their week-long road trip, opening up a four-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes (7-4). The Birds’ received a strong performance from starting pitcher Misael Siverio, but once again lacked run support, losing by the final score of 3-2 on Monday night at Shaw Park.

Siverio (1-1, 2.94) walked a season-high three batters, but might have put together his best all-around performance of the year, striking out four Goldeyes batters in his first loss of the season.

The Cuban left-hander gave up a lead-off single to Goldeye’s outfielder Adam Heisler in the bottom of the first inning, and allowed Miakol Gonzalez to reach base on a throwing error. Siverio was able to work his way out of the early jam, forcing Josh Romanski to lineout to Canaries first baseman David Bergin, who started the inning ending 3-3-6 triple play.

Romanski got back at Siverio later on in the bottom of the 4th inning, sending a leadoff homerun deep over the wall in right. The blast was the first round-tripper of the season for Romanski, and gave the Goldeye’s their first lead of the night.

The Canaries had a short-lived 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Ethan Chapman led off the game with an infield single and later scored on a two-out base hit from David Bergin. The two Canaries batters would team up again in the top of the sixth inning, when Chapman scored on Bergin’s second RBI single of the night, making it a 3-2 ball game.

The Birds’ offense went quiet after the 6th inning, with seven of the final nine batters striking out against the Goldeye’s bullpen. Former Canaries relief pitcher, Cameron McVey registered two strikeouts over one shutout inning against his former team.

Winnipeg’s starting pitcher Mikey O’Brien (3-0, 3.00 ERA) earned his third straight win after allowing two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander finished the night with a season high six strikeouts and just one walk.

Bergin finished the night going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, while Chapman wrapped up another solid night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Bergin is now hitting .417 this season, and leads the Canaries with 12 RBI.

The Canaries will look to snap their six-game skid on Tuesday night when RHP Shawn Blackwell (1-1, 4.39 ERA) takes the mound against Winnipeg RHP Kevin McGovern (0-0, 1.12 ERA). Fans can listen to the action live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.
