Brantley Gilbert is probably used to female fans throwing their undergarments onstage, but it's not all fun and games, as he found out the hard way at a concert.

The singer-songwriter ran into a reporter for TMZ at LAX, who asked him about the craziest thing he's ever seen thrown onstage at one of his gigs. "I was playing a show near home, and a bunch of my buddies went out to Walmart and got a bunch of oversized underwear and threw it all over the stage," Gilbert recalls in the clip above.

After that prank, another pair of underwear came sailing up and got stuck on the end of Gilbert's guitar, "and they were real large," he explains, smiling. "And I thought it was another joke, and I said, 'Oh, we got a big girl!'"

That turned out to be the wrong thing to say, since that pair actually belonged to a female fan who was in the audience. "This girl to my right and her boyfriend, she started crying, and her boyfriend looked all p---ed," he recalls.

Gilbert is well-known for his rowdy, party-hearty shows, but he's settled down offstage since he quit drinking a few years ago. He admits that he had worries about being able to do his job after he first got sober. “Looking back, I was thinking, since I was 15 years old, I’d been sneaking beers, I hadn’t been sober for a lot of these things, I was nervous about writing, performing, and doing my job like I used to," he says.

“I don’t want anybody to think that because I don’t drink that I’m boring. I’m the worst influence in the room,” he insists. “I drink vicariously through others. I love that atmosphere. I’m to a point now where it’s not for me.”

That means you can still go to one of Gilbert's epic live shows and have a great time, but here's a tip for his female fans: if you're going to throw underwear on the stage, you might want to buy them a few sizes smaller.
