A blizzard warning is in effect from until 9pm today (January 16) for parts of South Dakota and Minnesota including Sioux Falls.

Under normal circumstances, a blizzard warning would mean a lot of new snow is expected. Not with this storm. We're only looking at about an inch of snow, but with sustained winds of 40 miles an hour with wind gusts to 60+ miles an hour, visibilities could be zero at times.

The conditions are expected in a line from Huron to just north of Sioux Falls in southeast South Dakota and in southwest Minnesota.

South Dakota cities included in the warning are: Sioux Falls, Huron, Madison, Brookings, Howard, Arlington, Lake Preston, Flandreau and De Smet. In Minnesota, the warning includes Pipestone, Luverne, Worthington, Tyler, Hendricks, Marshall and Jackson.

Colder air is going to come into the region following this storm, dropping wind chill values to -10 to -20.
