Oh, Deer! They’re in the Road Again. New App Will Alert You To Road Dangers

Deer App
AvoiDeer

Always keeping a keen lookout for new apps, I recently ran across AvoiDeer, which could alert drivers to deer sightings while traveling.

1 in 68 South Dakota drivers will hit a deer in 2014, the 2nd highest rate in the US, according to the latest research.

The app is free. Here’s how it works using Sioux Falls in the map.

Upon download, the app will ask permission to use your location. Select “Allow.”

In this case, a deer was spotted along I-229 on the south side of Sioux Falls.

After clicking one button, from a safe location, and NOT while driving, a red triangle will appear in that location and a thank you will appear on the screen.

The free app is still gaining in popularity but I like it. Once the app becomes more popular in the Sioux Falls area, my guess is that Rice St., and other roads between Brandon and Sioux Falls will have more warnings. until then, it looks kind of barren.

Deer are back in the news again because of overpopulated urban concerns. The police department and South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks have already developed a proposed deer management plan through research and study of what other cities have done to control urbanized deer after several residents have expressed concern for their yards, plants and property due to the residential presence of deer.
