The Vatican has announced plans to open a McDonald's restaurant next to St. Peter's Square at The Vatican - but not everyone is "loving" the idea.

The plan is not being received well by Cardinals who live in the building above where the fast food restaurant is set to open.

According to ABC News Radio, one Cardinal went as far as to call the decision to rent the space out to McDonald's "perverse."

"The idea flies in the face of the architectural traditions of the famed basilica."

The Vatican's real estate agency argues, however, that the fast food chain has the potential of bringing in more than $30,000 a month.

Much the same happened 30 years ago when Italy's first McDonald's opened in the historic center of Rome. That too triggered a huge protest about the "Americanization of Italy."
