A Brookings, South Dakota woman is out $300 after falling victim to a scam artist posing as a police officer.

The woman told the Brookings police department that the officer threatened to arrest her if she didn't pay some overdraft fees.

Brookings Police Lt. Derrick Powers says, the con artist apparently knew the woman's location, named a nearby street and told the woman officers were waiting to take her into custody if she didn't comply.

The kicker is, the woman didn't even have any overdraft fees, but still wired the money to New York. She later realized the situation didn't seem quite right, feared she may have fallen victim to a scam and contacted police according to Powers.

Powers wants to remind everyone that police officers would never demand to have money wired to anyone.

Should something similar to this happen to you or someone you know, you need to contact the authorities immediately.
