A Message For Parents: Teen Prescription Drug Abuse [VIDEO]

No matter where you go, Darcy Jensen of Prairie View Prevention Services in Sioux Falls says teens are abusing prescription pain pills. In some cases, they are snorting the pills to bolster the high.

“It really is a situation where we’re seeing more high school and middle school students who are seeking a high using an over the counter medication,” said Jensen. “Nationally, the statistics indicate that among seniors, about 14 percent admit to having used a prescription in an abusive way.”

So, why are young people attracted to prescription pain pills?

“Teens are seeking a high. The pills impact the brain, just like an illicit drug would,” explained Jensen. “The users feel pleasure – that sense of reward of feeling good about something.”

Jensen encourages parents to talk to their kids about prescription pain pills.

“What we know is that many people think of prescription pain pills as safe because they got it from a doctor. It came from a pharmacy, unlike an illegal drug. They don’t think of the medication as being dangerous when in fact it is. We as parents know our children best. How do they normally act?  What is their normal behavior?  How do they look physically?  When those things begin to change, that’s when we need to do that check.  It could be our son or daughter is abusing prescription pain pills.”

Jensen says the bottom line is this: “Teens who are addicted need the support from family, friends and doctors. They need all the help they can get!”
