We all have childhood memories.  Is hunting one of your favorites like mine?

Remembering the first time going along with my dad pheasant hunting is like it was yesterday.  Then, taking the hunter safety course.  And then the big day.  My first hunt.  It's a right of passage for some.

This fall many youth in South Dakota will experience their first deer hunt as part of the two-day hunting camp the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department is putting on September 24-25 at Snake Den Lodge near Presho.

The camp is open to first-time youth deer hunters between the ages of 12 and 15.

Each young hunter will be paired with a mentor during the camp. Participants will learn how to select the best ammunition and firearm for deer hunting, improve shooting and safety, sight in a firearm, field dress and how to properly care for meat.

Participation is free. Applicants must be HuntSAFE certified, and a parent or guardian must attend the camp with them.
