Anyone who makes a habit of drinking and driving here in South Dakota should start to use better judgement right away, especially during the month of February.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol will be out in full force looking to catch drunk drivers. A series of sobriety checkpoints are planned during the month of February throughout the entire state.

Checkpoints will happen in 17 different counties here in South Dakota. The counties are: Beadle, Bennett, Brookings, Brown, Butte, Codington, Davison, Fall River, Hand, Hughes, Lyman, Meade, Minnehaha, Pennington, Roberts, Walworth and Yankton.

The checkpoints are designed to discourage people from drinking and then driving.

According to a study conducted in 2013, South Dakota is one of the top 5 states in the nation where you're most likely to get busted for a DUI, per capita. That's due to the fact the state is mostly rural in nature and Uber-like services are not always easily available.
